Planting Seeds in God's Garden
By Reverend Heather Daugherty
Reverend Heather is ESN’s Chaplain.
This year we are planting seeds and seeing what grows in God’s garden! After focusing on love and joy to start the school year, we will learn about peace and gratitude this fall. We will explore these ideas in all-school chapels as well as in our religious education classes. In October, we’ll spend time looking at how we can bring peace to our world everyday with how we treat our friends, family, and care for the earth. In November, we will explore the idea of gratitude and how our gratitude leads to generosity.
Our hope is that through our chapel program and religious education, ESN students experience joy and a sense of belonging. Our students are asking big questions and making insightful connections to their everyday lives. Through song, story, and exploration we are inviting them to know more about who they are and how much they are loved.
Our themes of gratitude and peace will be lived out through our first service learning project - a food drive! Our school will be collecting food for Second Harvest Food Bank October 27-November 21. We will talk with students about how we can show love and share joy by sharing what we have with others in our community who are hungry. Jack Stell, Manager of Community Partnerships, will be visiting us the morning of November 14 to share about the work of Second Harvest.
Ways you can connect:
Blessing of the Pets (October 3) - Bring your pet (or a picture!) as we host an all-school celebration of God’s love and care for all of creation.
All Saints Day (October 31) - We will be talking about saints and their importance as we prepare for All Saints chapel. If there is a special connection to a particular saint for you or your family, talk with them about it in preparation for our chapel service.
Practice Gratitude - Throughout the month of November help your student notice and name things they are grateful for and talk about it every day/week. Choose together some food to donate to the food drive and give thanks for the chance to share with others.
